The Independence Ghost Walk is the brainchild of Marilyn Morton. She hosted the first Ghost Walk in 2002 with over 300 guests visiting three downtown locations. Over the decades, the event has grown, both in attendance and the amount of volunteers it takes to make the event a success. Since its inception the Ghost Walk has been an event that is free to the public. The Ghost Walk is a time for guests, volunteers, and businesses to have fun together, welcome in the spooktacular season of October, and an opportunity for the history of Independence to shine.Though there are as many as 32 identified sites that could be part of the Ghost Walk, the event focuses on about 20 locations in the downtown core of Independence. This allows for visitors to see most of the sites within a comfortable walking distance. In all, about 30 volunteers are engaged in presenting the Ghost Walk. The Ghost Walk presents stories that are grounded in local lore. Guests get an education in the history of the community along with hearing stories of a spectral nature. Extensive research on local sites has been done to present them in accurate historic detail. When exploring the stops on the Ghost Walk you may encounter some volunteers who have decided to take their character to the next level - they often are wearing clothes that suit the story and may have props or take on a characters personality. This year we plan to line Main Street with Hearses!
